FAIRBANKS – Rapidly increasing sunlight each day, warmer temperatures and familiar smells in the air; spring is just around the corner. And with this seasonal change comes the infamous ‘spring cleaning’.

While some humans may be looking forward to spring cleaning, for others it can be a daunting expectation. Earlier this winter I had the opportunity to document, explore, and scavenge a hoarding site just outside of Fairbanks at temperatures nearing -40 F.

The site was the home and storage area of an elderly couple who had spent many years compiling their earthly possessions. I was informed that they came from a time and place (The Great Depression) where saving every last item was a must.

Hoarding sheds spilling out their contents into the Alaska winter

Before even entering the main living domicile, my party and I began exploring the numerous storage sheds and piles of possessions outside. As I started to unearth boxes in one shed, I noticed that each box contained various mushrooms and vegetation from the woods surrounding Fairbanks. These must have been items that squirrels or birds had been caching during the previous fall.

Mushrooms and other items found in the woods near Fairbanks, likely cached by a squirrel

The sheer enormity of the hoarded material was difficult to document. Below I have included a picture of items piled outdoors because there wasn’t enough storage space to contain them.

Surplus hoarding items that were too numerous to be stored indoors

Much of the interior of the house had already been cleaned out by the elderly couple’s grandson. But when he led me to an almost hidden storage area, I was greeted by one of the most extreme indoor hoarding stashes I have ever seen. The smell in the air, years of human skin and dust accumulation, was almost too much to handle. I spent a few hours climbing around in the dusty indoor room and as a result, I suffered respiratory unpleasantness for at least 24 hours.

The heart of the indoor hoarding operation. Years of dust and stored craft materials...

Spring cleaning probably never occurred in this Fairbanks home in over 30 years.

The grandson of the hoarders is currently trying to clean up the property. Many of the items hoarded are in very good condition and the amount of craft supplies the couple saved is staggering. If you are interested in obtaining, or hoarding, anything from the site, please contact articles@fairbanksirl.com so I can get you in communication with the owner who is looking to sell.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a newly-discovered class of short (19-24 nucleotides), non-coding RNA found in eukaryotic cells. miRNA regulates post-transcriptional silencing of protein coding genes, a process miRNA were not known to be involved in until the early 2000s. Basically, a new type of protein regulator in plants and animals has recently been discovered and it has some almost science-fiction-like properties.

Soylent Green

By regulating protein expression, organisms are able to adjust to different external variables in the environment without having to change their DNA. Plants are especially dependent on this sort of passive defense because they do not have the luxury of major movement like humans and other animals.

The secondary structure of miRNA

Until recently, scientists were not even aware that tiny key-like miRNAs were involved in turning on/off the proteins an organism can or cannot express. The critical biological processes that are modulated by miRNAs range from immune response to the maintenance of cell and tissue identity and everything in-between. Without the help (or hindrance) of miRNA, organisms would have significantly different life strategies than they do today.

But the real shocker came in 2011 when a team of Chinese researchers isolated plant miRNA found in rice that did not naturally occur in the human body (http://www.ask-force.org/web/Genomics/Zhang-Exogenous-plant-MIR168a-2011.pdf). By extracting miRNA from human blood sera, scientists were able to isolate the same miRNA that was made by the plants the humans had recently ingested. Studies were further confirmed when the researchers extracted plant miRNA from the organs of mice that were fed large quantities of food containing the exogenous plant miRNA.

What’s the moral of the story?

Plant miRNA can make it into your bloodstream through food intake and eventually cause changes in your protein expression! A new meaning to ‘you are what you eat’.

But what are the consequences for humans who have ingested foreign plant miRNA?

In the same study, certain plant miRNA was found to decrease the removal of LDL-cholesterol from the body by decreasing the liver’s ability to express the proper proteins for its removal. Drug companies rejoice! A totally new way to tinker with human health…

How does this discovery impact our understanding of what food to eat?

Vegetarians can take a chill pill before freaking out that their plant-heavy diets may cause detrimental health effects. There is no reason these plant miRNA (or miRNA from any organism in any kingdom) wouldn’t be in even higher concentrations in mammal or bird meat than in edible plants.

More importantly, however, are the unknown human health effects created from genetically modified crops made as a result of miRNA manipulation.

My favorite is, “Well, it’s not comfortable, honey…”

Speaking of absurd, intrusive laws in Texas, Alaska seems to be threatening to follow suit lately…..

The Mudflats published a scary and cynicism-inducing article on the subject just a few days ago, aptly named ‘Help, Help! There’s an Elephant in My Uterus!’ – So, if some of you ladies think that it might be a bit weird and a little, I don’t know, wrong?, to be legally-compelled to get permission from he that impregnated you, regardless of the status of your relationship with the fellow, before you’re allowed to consider dealing with your own pregnancy the way you see fit, then I suggest you peruse this article…..

(I mean, don’t get me wrong: I think that in the vast majority of cases the potential-father should most-definitely be allowed in the loop, at the very least — I certainly would want to be…It’s just that whole ‘legally-compelled’ part that troubles me…and probably you, too.)

FAIRBANKS — Along with a very small number of other newspapers across the nation, the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (as well as the Juneau Empire) chose not to publish (i.e., censor) last week’s series of Doonesbury comics.

For those of you that have been deprived until now, Doonesbury is the Pulitzer Prize-winning brainchild of Garry Trudeau that has now been syndicated for over 40 years — It is carried by over 1,400 newspapers.

The controversial comics in question use the recently-upheld ‘sonogram law’ in Texas as subject matter. Among other things, the law requires abortion-seeking women to have a sonogram 24 hours before their procedure.

Creator of 'Doonesbury', Mr. Garry Trudeau, pictured here in 1999

According to Anna Merlan, of the Dallas Observer, the law states that abortion-seeking women must also listen to their potential child’s heartbeat and receive state-mandated literature informing them of alternatives, even if the woman declines such information. Merlan adds that said literature contains claims that abortion is linked to breast cancer, which, according to the National Cancer Institute, is simply not true.

The Daily Cartoonist reported that, as of March 12th, at least 69 publications had decided to pull the series altogether. Make that 71.

Other papers, such as The Anchorage Daily News and The Los Angeles Times, reacted more sensibly, opting instead to temporarily move the strip from its normal location on the comics page, lest any children happen upon it and learn the sad truth.

Still others decided to run the whole series on a single day rather than tainting their papers for the whole week. Even some of them, though, chose not to include the 4th strip in the series, which was scheduled to appear on Thursday, the 15th — that one must be a doozy.

Fear not, Fairbanks — fairbanksirl.com will run the entire series right here, with the generous permission of Garry Trudeau himself, via Reader Supported News – they are releasing the six strips of the series this week, one-at-a-time, allowing them to be republished by folks like us.

Here is the first day’s strip, which was supposed to be published Monday, March 12th:

By Garry Trudeau (Courtesy of the Author & Reader Supported News)

I contacted the News-Miner’s office to see if they’d like to comment on why they chose to be part of the extreme minority of newspapers that decided to ban the series. (Again, Doonesbury is carried by over 1,400 papers, and less than 100 chose to practice censorship — that’s well under 10%, even if my numbers are way off.)

The Managing Editor of the News-Miner, Rod Boyce, promptly took my call but declined to comment, other than noting that he didn’t ‘want anything to do with (fairbanksirl.com).’ Fair enough — I’m sure he has his reasons, and I don’t begrudge him his opinion.

Jersey Jones (yes, that’s his real name), a regular News-Miner reader and fan of all things controversial, had this to say about the situation: “It’s sad to see the News-Miner resorting to censorship and kowtowing to the far-right interests of Texas fundamentalists…”

Here is the second strip in the series:

By Garry Trudeau (Courtesy of the Author & Reader Supported News)

Garland Walker, of Juneau, in a letter to the Juneau Empire dated March 15th, eloquently notes the absurdity of such censorship:

(titled ‘The Comics Police’)

Dear Juneau Empire: Thank you so much for policing the editorial page for me. The recent removal of the Doonesbury comic strip from the Empire editorial page saved me from having to consider if I agreed or disagreed with the comic strip’s point or even having to determine if, in fact, there was a point worth considering. Of course, this left me to ponder what is the purpose of an editorial page? I was under the impression that, among other things, it was to put forth ideas that caused — no, challenged — the readership to think critically about serious and topical issues. Thank you for correcting me of that misimpression. I agree that it is better left to the Empire to decide those messy matters for me. That way, I don’t waste my valuable time and possibly get confused about whether I agree or disagree with the Empire’s position. Unfortunately, now that I have done all this hard thinking in writing this letter, I have a headache. I was thinking about reading the comics in the comic section for relaxation. Please advise me if this is a safe decision or if doing so could be dangerous to my unchallenged points of view.

Well said. Well said, indeed.

Here is the third strip in the series:

By Garry Trudeau (Courtesy of the Author & Reader Supported News)

For those of you interested in more information about the actual bill that started this whole thing, and the resulting appeals ruling in favor of it, read more HERE and HERE, respectively.

The man himself, Garry Trudeau, in an email to Reuters, had this to say about the inspiration behind the banned series:

“…(the) party of limited government,” (an apparent reference to Republicans) has put into law “onerous preconditions for a perfectly legal procedure…”

“This is happening in statehouses across the country,” Trudeau continued. ”It’s lunacy, and lunacy, of course, is in my wheelhouse.”

Here is the fourth strip in the series: (this is the one that even some of the non-censoring papers chose to censor)

By Garry Trudeau (Courtesy of the Author & Reader Supported News)

(Again, many thanks to Mr. Trudeau and Reader Supported News for sharing.)

ALASKA — Yes, this one can be filed in the ‘blatant discrimination’ category. According to Dermot Cole, columnist for the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, the University of Alaska is considering instituting a ban on the hiring of tobacco users as early as July. No, this isn’t discrimination anywhere near as ugly as the sort that’s based on race, gender, or creed. But it’s discrimination all the same and, as is usually the case, it is based on ill-thought-out, arbitrary assumptions and biases. Remember, we’re talking about the legal consumption of a legal substance. In your own home. Off the clock.

It seems that the main arguing point for putting such a ban in place (besides the always popular, ‘because it’s not good for you’) is to save the University money by reducing the tobacco-associated health costs that its insurance must cover. That makes sense — the University, after all, is a business and must look to keep costs down just as any other business must. So why not charge an extra fee or raise the premiums for those employees who smoke?

Apparently the U of A did give a bit of thought to that option, but concluded that such fees/charges might come off as a bit too ‘punitive’ or ‘intrusive’, and that they would be difficult to enforce. Agreed.

A future U of A non-hire.

So, to get around this, the University is simply considering not hiring them at all. The University would presumably conduct a pre-employment ‘nicotine test’ (perhaps right after testing for the presence of caffeine, liberal beliefs, and bacon-double cheeseburgers) that would separate the guilty from the innocent.

Let’s be clear here: That health costs for smokers are generally higher than those for non-smokers is a pretty widely agreed-upon fact, and as such, employers that provide health coverage to their workers have very good reason to take this information into consideration when implementing their healthcare policies. By simply not hiring these potentially overly-expensive employees in the first place, the problem is solved.

Sure, adopting such a hiring policy is harsh, and should be illegal (actually, it is illegal in 29 states), but it makes perfect sense from a business’ perspective.

But why stop there? How about refusing to hire fat people? Or people that indulge in a couple of gin & tonics after work each day, while sitting in their own recliner in their own house? Or anyone over the age of, say, 45? Why haven’t we heard about these ideas being discussed? Do old age, obesity, and alcoholism cost businesses that much less in healthcare costs than smoking does? — so much less that it’s simply a non-issue?

It took only a cursory amount of research to find that the opposite is true. According to one study, healthcare costs associated with smoking and alcoholism were far lower than those associated with obesity and normal aging — in some cases, up to 3 or 4 times lower. Another study (this one conducted in order to estimate the medical and indirect costs to the Department of Defense that are associated with smoking, obesity, and alcoholism) included dollar amounts to go along with their findings:

The DoD spends an estimated $2.1 billion per year on medical care associated with smoking, obesity, and alcoholism. The breakdown is as follows:

– cost of medical care associated with tobacco use = $564 million
– cost of medical care associated with obesity = $1.1 billion
– cost of medical care associated with alcoholism = $425 million

A quick bit of arithmetic and it becomes quite clear: obesity-related costs amount to about double what tobacco-related costs do.

And, mind you, this study was published in 2007 — what do you think today’s numbers look like? And if you’re going to consider that, you must also consider the fact that smoking rates in this country have been steadily falling while obesity rates are steadily rising.

Conclusion: Hey, University! — Wake up and smell the lack of logic in the air! Perhaps it’s time to rethink your so-called line of thinking. If your true aim is to save yourself and your employees some money by snubbing tobacco users, well, clearly there are much bigger fish to fry.

FAIRBANKS — Alaska has always been behind the times when it comes to the infiltration of major United States chain restaurants. On March 5, 2012, a spokesman for the Chili’s brand announced, “I can confirm Chili’s Anchorage, Fairbanks and Wasilla restaurants have closed.” While 600 people lost their jobs unannounced, the closure attracted news reports from all major news sources in Alaska.

To find out more about how Alaskans actually feel about the Chili’s closure, fairbanksirl ran the following poll during the week of March 11:

Regarding the ‘Chili’s Restaurant’ closure & potential re-opening:
1) What ever happened to ‘Dairy Queen’?!?
2) I vote for a more relevant poll next week.
3) Get it re-opened, soon!
4) Good riddance! – And stay out

Interestingly, only 4% (1 vote) of voters chose ‘Get it re-opened, soon!’. The remaining votes were split almost perfectly, with ‘What ever happened to ‘Dairy Queen’?!?’ and ‘Good riddance! – And stay out!’ each receiving 33% of the vote and ‘I vote for a more relevant poll next week.’ capturing the remaining 30%.

Since two of the choices (comprising 63% of the votes) had nothing to do with Chili’s, the most apparent attitude coming from Alaskans seems to be “Who cares?” And those who did care were overwhelmingly pleased (8 for, 1 against) with the franchise’s decision to pack up and leave the last frontier.

According to Wikipedia, there are Chili’s restaurants in nearly 40 countries, including in such unlikely locations as Kuwait and Guatemala. Along with those in Alaska, other locations around the globe have run into problems as well: all of the Australian locations were shut down in 2008 due to illegal employment practices and a branch in Abu Dhabi was shut down last year ‘for violating hygiene standards.’

The three Alaskan locations were reportedly closed because of mismanagement and financial problems, with the Fairbanks location being noted as the least profitable of the three. Probably not coincidentally, a significant number of Fort Wainwright troops were deployed overseas this past winter.

The richest deposit of rare earth elements (REE) in the United States is thought to be in Bokan Mountain, Alaska, an area which spans 19 square miles. The site contains Alaska’s only uranium mine and recent geological investigations by Ucore (the company that owns the land) indicate mineral deposits rich enough to mine commercially. Also, the Bokan Mountain mining area lies on the Pacific Ocean, allowing for easy access to marine transportation for the mined rare earth metals.

Since REE are used in many electronics, from cell phones to important military weapons (such as drones), there is a huge demand worldwide for these rare metals. China is by far the world’s leading producer, making the United States heavily dependent on China’s near monopoly. Currently, politicians such as Barack Obama have mainly tried to make demands of or reason with China rather than figuring out a sustainable way to extract REE from US soil.

Uraninite, one of the rare earth elements (REE) found in Alaska

In Alaska, politicians have taken a more proactive, sustainable stance. According to ucore.com, “The FY2013 (Alaska) Budget includes $2.7 million as part of a 3-year project (comprising $8.1 million in total) to obtain critical information in further researching and assessing Alaska’s rare earth element and strategic minerals potential”. As noted by Alaska Governor Sean Parnell, “This budget is aimed at streamlining the state’s permitting processes.” While the major politicians in Washington may not be publically advocating REE mining on US soil, the decision to increase state funding for the investigation of REE mining feasibility is already a go.

Since Obama recently commented about REE without mentioning the apparent feasibility of mining on US soil, don’t be surprised if the republicans advise US mining efforts as a political scheme during the upcoming presidential election. But would it really be a scheme? Expanding REE mining on US soil will not only create jobs while injecting money into the US economy, but it would also reduce US dependence on overseas operations looking to clean up financially on their world monopoly.

ALASKA — I would venture to guess that most dog owners haven’t thought through the contingency of having to perform C.P.R. on their dog within seconds of it suddenly collapsing, let alone having to do so in freezing temperatures, miles from any help, and without the aid of a motor vehicle – but that is precisely the situation that an Anchorage musher found himself in last Monday evening (3/5).

According to the Anchorage Daily News, musher Scott Janssen was a little over a day into his 2nd Iditarod when he found himself sobbing over one of his older huskies after it had suddenly collapsed, several miles from the nearest checkpoint. Mr. Janssen reacted quickly, utilizing a technique he had learned from veteran musher Paul Gebhardt, and was eventually able to revive the dog.

After tucking the dog’s tongue back into his mouth and holding his mouth shut, “I had my mouth over his nose, breathing into his nose as I was compressing and rubbing his chest, trying to work the air out,” Janssen said.

Janssen continued this process for what was probably about 5 minutes, though he said it seemed like an eternity, and ‘Marshall’ finally came to with a grunt.

“I really love that dog…I was sobbing…I’m like, c’mon dude, please come back.”

Scott Janssen & an unidentified dog on an unknown date - (AP Photo/Mark Thiessen)

“And he did.”

Here I should note that Janssen’s ‘day job’ is owning and operating an Anchorage funeral home (for over 20 years now), a profession that has earned him the nickname, ‘the Mushing Mortician’, which he has referred to himself as for some time now…I’ll leave it at that.

Anyway, Janssen loaded Marshall into the sled and safely made it to the next checkpoint, Rohn, despite breaking a runner on the way. Marshall was checked out by the vets there and seemed to be just fine. By the next morning, Marshall “[was] standing around, bummed-out that he wasn’t going with us,” Janssen said.

Marshall was eventually flown home to Anchorage the next day and Janssen continued on with the remainder of his team. (As of press time, he was ranked in 39th place, of the 54 remaning teams of the original 66…)

If you want to learn more about performing C.P.R. on non-human animals, you can start by visiting HERE. I also recommend learning how to perform the non-human version of the Heimlich maneuver while you’re at it, especially if your dog is as stupid about eating inedibles as mine is. You can learn about it HERE.

Non-consensual interspeciel CPR

And I suppose that I would be remiss if I didn’t also include links that instruct how to perform these life-saving techniques on human animals — so if you can imagine yourself ever being in a situation where you might actually want to save a human life, visit these sites and pay attention: Human CPR & Heimlich for humans…

Lastly, if the above methods don’t end up working for you and you find yourself in need of the sort of counseling and service that funeral homes provide, why not give Scott ‘the Mushing Mortician’ Janssen a holler at Janssen Funeral Homes? (I assume that they only take on human clients, however.)

FAIRBANKS — Last week marked the completion of fairbanksirl’s poll regarding the potential closure of Eielson Air Force Base. The results were very close, with 47.6% of the votes in favor of keeping Eielson open and 52.4% in favor of closing it down. Conclusion: fairbanksirl readers are split on the issue.

The opinion of the media is another story. The Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly has already approved over $100,000 in spending to analyze the United States Air Force decision to move the F-16s. Property taxes and home rental costs in areas such as North Pole have been on the rise over the last 10 years, arguably due to increases in military personnel.

So the base gives Alaska more taxes to play with and the state uses the money to try and keep the base? This explains why the politicians are fighting so hard (spending Alaska tax money) to keep the base.

But what about the opinion of the average Fairbanks resident? Our poll indicates that interest in closing the base is split down the middle. There are many positives and negatives associated with Eielson’s closure, yet only the opinions of the politicians seem to be represented in the news.

fairbanksirl will continue to provide updates on the Eielson controversy in order to offer underrepresented opinions that the big dogs (News-Miner, Anchorage Daily News) are not willing to objectively provide.
